Animation was something I understood before I could explain it. Growing up in Mexico meant growing up with Les Contes de la rue Broca on ONCE children's television, the Russian The Snow Queen animated fairy tale , Kirikou et la Sorcière …visual worlds that did not condescend to their audience, that used color, movement, and timing to communicate things that could not be said plainly. That early exposure set a standard I still measure against. What animation makes possible is the manipulation of plasticity itself: the capacity to bend time, to make weight felt through movement, to communicate through the rhythm of a transition what words would require a paragraph to explain. A frame held one beat too long changes what the viewer feels. Motion is not simply decoration applied to an image; it is a separate language with its own syntax, and learning it changes how you think about the still image as well.
