Zines

There is something that digital design cannot reproduce: the weight of paper, the specific resistance of a folded edge, the way a printed image holds differently than a screen-lit one. Holding the finished zine is a different experience than approving the PDF. The object has a presence that the file did not. Building zines is also a technical exercise in humility. Printing punishes assumptions —about margins, about color profiles, about how a typeface reads at small sizes on uncoated stock. Bleed, registration, the difference between what the screen shows and what the ink holds. These are not abstract problems; they are problems you solve by printing a test copy and seeing what went wrong. The outcome is small enough to hold in one hand and specific enough that every decision in it is visible. That accountability is part of what makes the format worth returning to.
